Histoire de l'artiste

I grew up in the bush with adopted parents who didn’t speak English. I’m not sure how old I was when we came to Wekweètì! I loved growing up out there - everything was traditional.

I learned to sew when I was a teenager by watching women in the community sew, mostly my sister and aunty Melanie. I would sit beside her and watch her. I didn’t ask her to teach me but I just watched and the next thing you know I tried on my own. I made mistakes, but I learned from my mistakes.

I like to make slippers, mukluks, mittens, gloves and vests and decorate them with beading and embroidery. I like to use beaver and rabbit fur. I also draw my own designs. I just do whatever but it just always turns out. Sometimes in the middle of night I wake up and I just see flowers just like a dream. I have a writing pad by my bed and sometimes get up grab my pen and just draw the flower I saw in my dream.

Sewing makes me feel good. The things are so beautiful once you are done you can’t wait to finish, especially when you can just tell how it is going to look and want to see the beautiful work that is done.
